Doheny State Beach, in Dana Point, was California's first state beach (donated for public use in 1931, named in 1963) and is a well-known surf spot drawing about a million visitors a year. Its northern end has a surfing beach, sand volleyball courts and a five-acre picnic lawn; the southern end offers a campground, and there is a tide pool and a visitor center with aquariums.
